BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN AFRICA

EDIBLE AND INDUSTRIAL OILS AS INCOME BUILDING POWER FOR AN AFRICAN COMMUNITY. PART II

On the promotion board of ISSUE N° 25 - Click here for more - an introduction was made to oil industry based on various oil containing seeds, nuts and kernels. An oil industry based on the processing of these seeds, nuts and kernels could be considered as an "economic catalyst" and launching pad for the economic development of an African country's regional territory. In issues N° 20; 21 and 22 another kind of "niche" operation FREEZE-DRIED PAPAIN PRODUCTION has been extensively developed. KENAF INDUSTRIES were considered in issues 23 and 24.

- Different techniques and methods of extracting oil

Oil extraction can be mechanically performed - with oil presses, expeller; or with solvents. Mechanically performed extraction are more adapted to small scale oil processing. Solvent extraction which provides product of pure quality and better yield is capital intensive and more suitable if large quantity of raw materials are available in a production area.

Small scale or industrial oil processing operations produce an interesting by- product: Oil Meal (10 to 60% of the original raw material weight); which can be either a valuable human food (Sesame seed cake) or excellent animal feed component.

- Investment comparison

1° - At the following link you have access to a complete Business Plan to a capital intensive operation to producing a great profit making product Shea Butter; originating from a kernel which is abundant in the sahelian region from Senegal to the Horn of Africa: (Password: africabiz1000; ID: oxfordCLUB - both are case sensitive).

2 - Small Scale Operation: There are, on the food-processing's equipment marketplace, equipment tailored for the small entrepreneur interested in producing edible or industrial oil. (Input "oil press" in your search engine and you will get links to manufacturers)

These equipment are versatile. They can be used to process quite all the seeds, nuts and kernels listed in the following table. Their processing capacity ranges from as low as 5 to 8 kg per hour of raw material to 100 to 300 kg.

Let's consider an oil expeller of 40 kg processing capacity per hour of dried sesame seeds; to produce 10 liters of pure oil per hour; and 28 kg of Oil Meal per hour. We have the following simulated operational data - under the following assumptions: three expellers; 1 shift - 8 effective working hours; 26 working days per month; 12 months of operation; raw material's local purchasing price: US $ 480 per metric ton; sesame oil's local selling price: US $ 1 per liter; Oil Meal's local selling price: US $ 68 per metric ton:

One can see that the Return On Investment is "excellent" under the assumptions made here

- This small scale oil processing operation is a perfect "economic catalyst" activity. It can be used - if well planned and implemented - to establish a strong industrial base in any African country; and give job to thousand of small entrepreneurs. Loan scheme to these small industrialists will be paid back easily. Industrial oils generated by these small scale operations are raw materials for a string of other industrial productions; such as: soap, cosmetics, food products, detergents, paints and even substitutes to petroleum-based lubricants and fuels. The Oil Meal will help solving the animal feed problem which exist in most sub-Saharan African countries and boost up animal breeding: cattle, goats and so forth.

Figures outlined in above table clearly show that the establishment of a network of small scale oil processing units - based on nuts, kernels and oil-containing seeds - is a perfect "Income Building Power" operation; labor intensive and foreign currency provider or saver. Capable of generating the "Synergetic Impact Factor" here available
