A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Dear visitor and international investor,

We warmly welcome you, if this is your first visit to Africabiz Online - The ultimate newsletter on trading and investing in 49 sub-Saharan African countries. If you are a regular and faithful reader, welcome back.

If you are a regular and faithful reader, welcome back.

- THERE ARE PLENTY OF ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES TO LIFTING AFRICAN COUNTRIES FROM POVERTY LEAGUE TO PROSPERITY

This delivery sees the end of the series about "Tropical Fruits Industry As Income Building Power For An African Community". A quick estimate of the potential market for natural food enzymes and supplements throughout Africa closes the series and shows that it is possible to establish, at least, 20 medium scale pharmaceuticals industries in African countries; based on the development of pineapple agribusiness.

Reviewing issues dedicated to the matter, one can see that tropical fruits industry is an important component of the "Strategy for African Countries" and one of the booster of the "Synergetic Impact Factor" or Self Inducing And Accelerating Impact, which is the trigger to Double Digit Growth Rate; the sine qua non fundamental to alleviating poverty in any emerging country.

The series about agribusiness development on tropical fruits, and particularly those dedicated to pineapple agribusiness show clearly that any African country can easily set up sound basis for an integrated economy in which agriculture, industries and services are closely linked and quickly bridge the developing gap over a span time of maximum 30 years.

As since 49 months, AFRICABIZ ONLINE will continue, relentlessly, month after month, demonstrating that "There Is No Poor African Country. Only Lack Of Imagination And Mismanagement" and that African decision makers in governing circles will gain more, as far as the global security and prosperity of their countries are concerned, to always base their political and economic decisions on safeguarding and improving existing assets instead of starting afresh from rubbles.

- FROM RE-FOUNDATION TO GUARDIANSHIP

We have dealt with the sad economic and political consequences of not building on existing assets in a previous delivery considering the The Stupid Dive Into Hell Of Once Prosperous African Countries: Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe..

Here, we consider the matter again and further due to the fact that Ivory Coast is now, since February 5, 2003, under the tutelage of the United Nations, 43 three years after gaining political independence.

- Contributor's Guidelines are here for review. Your contribution on "How African countries / entrepreneurs could bridge the developing gap" is welcome.

Many thanks for dropping by and see you here on March 15, 2003

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN AFRICA

- Several business opportunities with high profit making potential, which are economic catalysts and components to the Strategy for African Countries - here available, have been introduced to you. They are listed in following table.

a- SHEA BUTTER (Issues 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13)
b- BLUE GOLD (Issues 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
c- FREEZE-DRIED PAPAIN (Issues 20, 21, 22 and here)
d- KENAF (Issues 23, 24)
e- VEGETABLE OIL (Issues 25, 26, 27 and 28)
f- CEREALS (Issues 30, 31, 32, 33)
g- FRUITS (34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 42, 43, 44, 45)

- TROPICAL FRUITS INDUSTRY AS INCOME BUILDING POWER FOR AN AFRICAN COMMUNITY: PART XII : TREMENDOUS MARKET IN AFRICA FOR FOOD ENZYME / NATURAL NUTRIMENT / BROMELAIN / PAPAIN

This delivery is the fifth [42, 43, 44, 45] of Africabiz Online Monthly Issue dedicated to pineapple agribusiness, because pineapple fruit is first a good "economic catalyst" and second an extraordinary concentrate of several chemical components necessary to a healthy human and animal life as shown by the composition here exposed.

Currently, pineapple cultivated in African countries is exported as fresh or canned fruit, or locally processed into juice concentrates and syrup for the local and export market. Pineapple bran, the cake / residue obtained after extracting the juice, has a high content of vitamin A: it is an excellent feed for livestock.

The most interesting processed product from pineapple, however, is a food enzyme called Bromelain or Bromelin, which is a competitor to papain.
Issue 45 had been dedicated to investment and production cost related to a medium size factory producing 50 Metric Tons / year of bromelain in African economic conditions.

- In view of of Bromelain's medicinal usage here reported, and the outstanding chemical components present in pineapple fruit itself, African countries should setup pharmaceuticals / phytomedicinal industries / food enzymes for local and export market.

- NUTRICEUCALS / NUTRIMENTS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Nutriceucals (Nutriments + pharmaceuticals) are a broad range of chemical / bio products, which composition is based on natural enzymes (bromelain and or papain). Nowadays, nutriceucals are used in the developed world to provide nutrition supplements to people: children growth supplement, elders' anti aging supplement, competition / sports' performance enhancement, cholesterol control medication, energy supplement, blended vitamins supplements, chronic conditions support, pigmentation control, skin protection treatments, weight loss support. Etc.

Nutriceucals are made from natural enzymes: papain and bromelain and delivered in capsules with several kinds of dosages.

 - STANDARD DOSAGE FOR NUTRICEUCALS / NUTRIMENTS AND SUPPLEMENTS

The standard dosage of bromelain is unique in that it is based on the gelatin-digesting unit (g.d.u.) or the milk-clotting unit (m.c.u.) activity. The most effective range of activity appears to be between 1,800 to 2,000 m.c.u. or g.d.u. For use as other than a digestive aid (e.g. inflammation, trauma, arthritis, etc.) the typical dosage is between 250 and 750 mg. three times daily, taken on an empty stomach (before or between meals). Source

- QUANTITIES OF CAPSULES OBTAINED BASED ON ABOVE DOSAGES

Let's consider the lower end of dosage i.e. 250 mg per capsule and calculate the amount of capsules that could be manufactured from one kilogram of bromelain: 1 kg = 1000 grams = 1,000,000 milligrams / divided by 250 = 4,000 capsules.

- PRODUCTION COST OF CAPSULES

And based on table below (Extracted from issue 45) the production cost of one capsule is approximately: US$ 19.5 / 4.000 = .005. That is to say 25 cents for a bottle of 50 capsules with 250 mg content of bromelain; 50 cents for 500 mg content of bromelain per capsule and US$ 1.5 for 750 mg content of bromelain.

REMARK:
the production cost per bottle (50 capsules) above briefly outlined will be slightly higher in fact, taking into account the other operating costs (other additives, packaging; Etc.). However one can have an idea of the profit margin left over just by comparing that cost of production of 50 capsules to the prevailing prices on the nutriceucals and supplements market, which range from US$ 7 to 45 Source [Search for bromelain].

OPERATING COSTS

Operational Expenses: Raw material (around 2,320 metric tons of pineapple stems) harvesting, handling and transport to plant floor - production costs - insurance - utilities - staff and hands / management salaries - external management assistance - amortization - interests on loan - merchandise packaging. Etc.

Cost of production off Plant Floor of One Metric Ton of Crude Bromelain 19,5

- QUANTITIES OF 50 CAPSULES BOTTLES PRODUCED FROM 50 METRIC TONS OF BROMELAIN

A bottle of nutriceucals of 50 capsules at 250 mg of bromelain per capsules contains 12,500 mg or 12.5 grams of bromelain. Therefore 50 metric tons of bromelain (the factory annual production) shall yield 4,000,000 millions bottles. For 500 mg of bromelain per capsule, the yield shall be around 2, 000,000 bottles and for 750 mg per capsule, 1,000,000 bottles.

With profit margin (See above Remark) that could run as big as 100% over production cost, taking into account the prevailing retail selling prices Source [Search for bromelain], one can have a good idea of the profit making potential of producing nutriceucals in Africa.

- ESTIMATION OF GLOBAL AFRICAN MARKET FOR NUTRICEUCALS

Bromelain has a very large specter of usage in biochemistry, pharmacology and miscellaneous illness treatments because it contains, among other components, various closely related proteinases. Click here for more.

Therefore, pineapple agribusiness can be used to establish pharmaceuticals industries throughout African countries to deliver supplements and nutriments to the population.

The actual population level of Africa at the beginning of the new millennium stands at around 800,000,000 people. In table below is an estimate of profit level that could be achieved with nutriments / supplements industry based on pineapple / bromelain versus the percentage of targeted population. (One bottle of 50 capsule of nutriceucals per year; with U$ 2 per bottle as profit margin)

Population % 10 20 30 40 50
Bottles (50 caps) x 1,000 80,000 160,000 240,000 320,000 400,000
Gross Profit US$ x 1,000 240,000 480,000 720,000 960,000 1,200,000

The lowest hypothesis of targeting 10% of the population requires 20 (twenty) medium size factories (Producing globally 500 metric tons of bromelain per year).

Indeed, there is no doubt that African countries have, with papain and bromelain, a tremendous business opportunity:

- With credit worthy outlets such as the US, the EU and Japan (Big importers of food enzymes).
- With a huge potential local and regional markets (Globally near 800,000,000 people) for nutriceucals and supplements.
- With the possibility to supplying (in the near future) papain and bromelain to the pharmaceutical industry for the production of vaccine against AIDS / HIV.
