A KINGDOM ON THE MAKING IN AFRICA?
The
man who ruled unchallenged the west African country of Togo since 1967, president
Egnasigbe Eyadema, died on February 5, 2005. Rumors had it for many months that
he was sick. He apparently died of heart attack.
Doubtless, his death
opens a new era for Togo. It signals also the end of peculiar political relationships
between some African rulers and the former colonial power - France.
Eyadema
seized power in two steps. He led in 1963 a bloody coup and personally physically
eliminated the first Togo's elected president Sylvanus Olympio. He staged another
one in 1967 to remove from power president Nicolas Grunitsky, who succeeded Sylvanus
Olympio. He then acutely managed to stay on Togolese political stage for 38 years
nonstop.
Past century's last decade had been a difficult one for him and
for Togolese people. The opposition parties staged strikes and civil disobedience
throughout the 1990's to obtain the establishment of the multi-party system. They
won and the multi-party system was written into 1992's Constitution.
However,
Eyadema used his political cunning to survive and continued ruling with his party
The Rally for the Togolese People - RPT - as if nothing changed. He played astutely
with the rivalry amongst the contenders, who, one way or another (except for Gilchrist
Olympio - the son of the president who led Togo into independence in 1960) had
been partners to ruling the country before adopting the clothes of opponents.
Just after the announcement of his death by the prime minister on the evening
of February 5, 2005, his son Faure Eyadema had been co-opted by the Military to
replace his father in flagrant violation to the Constitution, which states
that the president of the national assembly should be the acting president for
the 60 days necessary to organize a new presidential election.
To avoid
the probable boycott of the international community - the African Union in particular,
that is against coups - the members of parliament voted on February 6, 2005 to
remove the president of the Assembly Fambare Natchaba Ouattara and confirm the
choice of the Military.

EYADEMA'S LEGACY
The deceased president left a deeply divided country.
His clan mostly made of Northerners exercised dictatorship power over the Southerners
for four decades running.
Now, the destitution of the president of the
national assembly (a Northerner who was also a pillar of the regime) is a telling
sign of the dissension existing amongst the political heirs.
The near
future should tell if Togolese people would accept a monarchy under the cover
of a formal republic.
The simple truth is that it will not be an
easy task for those attempting to impose Faure Eyadema to mend fences with the
main opposition parties.
Indeed,
the Union of the Forces for Change (UFC), the Action Committee for Renewal (CAR)
and Democratic Convention for African People (CPDA) would not certainly make the
task easy for them participating in a flawed political reconciliation dialogue.
The UFC for instance would not accept the exclusion of his leader Gilchrist
Olympio from the new political process. Gilchrist Olympio lives in forced exile.
He had been denied entry into Togo by the authorities since 1998.
As
far as the economy is concerned, the legacy of the deceased president is negative
as shown by the table below:

One
sees the per Capita Gross National Product (GNP) evolution remained stagnant during
four decades running under Eyadema's rule. The economy never took off to creating
riches for all and jobs to cope with demand.
Eyadema ruled for 38 years
and his son took over as soon as he died. Imagine he lives to his father age.
That will make nearly 70 years of Eyademas' monarchy under a formal republic of
Togo with no guarantee for an harmonious developing of Togo.
Africa
does not need to add scares to the pandemic AIDS disease, which is killing millions
and acting as a destructuring factor in score of countries. In the contrary, Africa
needs to embark in a sustainable development process that creates riches for all
and jobs to cope with demands.
African people in any single African country
are eager to have access to electricity, clean water, schools, universities and
Medicare. They want free speech and free movement in and out.
That cannot
be acquired with the assistance of rulers who does not care like the Eyademas. These
bad rulers are "a huge blot to Africa's record" as declared on February
6, 2005 Archbishop Desmond Tutu speaking of Zimbabwe's Mugabe.
The international
community - under the supervision of the United Nations' Security Council - has
the right to interfere into the affairs of any country, which rulers are vampires
sucking the blood of the nations they are in charge of. Click
