COMPLEMENTARY CURRENCY TO NATIONAL CURRENCY: DEFINITION
In
previous deliveries [1, 2]
Africabiz Online hailed the
emergence of the BRICS entity
that would provide financing
alternatives to African countries
in addition to the existing
ones - mainly procured till
now by the World Bank, the
IMF and cohort.
The setup of the BRICS entity
is a breakthrough that would assist
developing nations get financing
for comprehensive development scheme
- the most efficient way to create
riches for all, and alleviate
poverty - as exposed in Africans,
Stop Being Poor!
In said book are listed score and
score of financing engineering
schemes/suggestions to power on
the implementation of comprehensive
development projects in African
nations.
One important financing alternative,
however, had not been exposed in
the book, in order not the cloud
the description of the exposed
Integrated Developing Scheme,
to make it "easy" to
read and comprehend for all.
That missing financing alternative
is the description of Complementary
Currency Systems that
allow for (Mutual) credit to be
granted to producers in rural areas,
interest free, making "money"
available to rural folks to pay
for their vital needs, to use as
medium of exchanges within the
circle of fellows members, to
purchase raw materials in order
to produce and sell goods.
A Complementary Currency System
acts in parallel with the existing
national currency (issued by the
Central Bank,) to make liquidity
available to craftsmen, farmers,
herders and all rural people engage
in economic activities who have
difficulty to access the normal
banking system, that charge "huge"
interest rates - and require various
credentials and collateral to grant
a loan.
The PDF
document available here gives
a comprehensive description about
Complementary Currency
Systems.
-
HOW IT WORKS
The diagram below, courtesy of
http://koru.or.ke/bangla,
is the perfect illustration of how the system works. Bengla standing for Bengla-Pesa - the
Complementary Currency setup in Kenya by social workers dedicated to improving
the living standard of rural people, providing them with "alternative" financing
means to produce and purchase goods and services.
|
Local
business people list with the
system's governing body
(Bengla Business Network),
get
"mutual credit" vouchers
to use as a payment mean to
purchase raw materials, various
production inputs and other
goods, to produce and sell
- with participant members
of the
Business Network.
The governing body would use
part of the repayment by the
adherents to provide community
development services.
-
IS THIS MONEY FORGERY?
Most of the time, in communities
implementing Complementary Currency
scheme around the world, the physical
voucher acting as payment-mean
looks nothing like correspondent
(official) national currency. Therefore
one cannot say that the voucher
is a forgery of the existing national
currency.
However, it might be seen as a
"forgery" by the national Central
Bank if its inception and establishment
had not been endorsed by national
authorities, and is the sole result
of the undertaking of social workers.
