WORD FROM THE EDITOR
| |
Dear visitor and international investor,
We warmly welcome
you, if this is your first visit
to Africabiz Online - The ultimate
newsletter on trading and investing
in 49 sub-Saharan African countries.
If you are a regular and faithful
reader, welcome back.
- THE
THIRD TERM POLITICAL DISEASE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN COUNTRIES.
The
year 2014 started with deadly
political clashes bordering
civil wars in several sub-Saharan
African countries.
The Central African Republic
and South-Sudan being the most
visible examples. The ultimate
cause of the clashes being
rampant poverty. Rulers and
the opposition fighting to
control meager financial resources.
The Central African Republic
and South-Sudan are not
the only ones concerned by state
disorder and poverty. The temperature
is boiling up in several others
where irresponsible rulers
are using all political tricks
and ropes to amend the Constitution,
in order to get a third term
and stay in power..for ever!
For sure, these political behavior
could open the door to huge
social disturbances and chaos,
which would further
hamper the developing process.
These rulers who caught the
third term disease are neglecting
to fulfill their main duty,
which is to develop the nation,
implementing policies that
create riches for all and increase
the purchasing power of the
populations - that had stagnated
for 50 years running - averaging
only US500/year per capita
for most - as extensively demonstrated
in Africans,
Stop Being Poor!
They, the sick rulers and
their ministries waste valuable
action-time roaming the country
- day in day out - for non-productive
meetings, shouting out false
promises to the populations,
distributing cash to bolster
their popularity. They have
it easy do behave like that
as the populations are in deep
poverty - eating one meal every
other day,
and desperate to have few cents
to spend.
Most of the time, these rulers
come to power without a true
developing program. They
just needed to chant the sing-song
of "changes, things must
change"
to be in sync with the populations
- and grab the power from failed
and dying regimes. The populations
seeing the new comer as a savior.
In an article dated
back to April 15, 2011,
Africabiz Online highlighted
Benin's bad economic development
performance under the leadership
of its president, Yayi Boni.
And in subsequent articles
[1, 2]
the conclusion had been reached
that the country would be in
deep political trouble in
the near future of two years
time.
Unfortunately, Africabiz Online's forecast is now a palpable reality in Benin at the beginning of this year 2014.
The economy is in shamble and mistrust, intrigues and dirty
political maneuvers are - since the strange presidential election ballot
described in above links - destructuring the country's social fibers, due to
the relentless push by Yayi Boni, to amend the Constitution, to run for
a third term.
Yayi Boni is not the only one playing that game. Another west African ruler,
Burkina-Faso's Blaise Compaor, is also working hard to amend the Constitution's
Article 37, to stay in power for ever. He is at the helm of the country
since 26 years - which Gross National Product had remained flat (averaging
US100 per capita) for 26 years running!
The problem is the situation cannot stay as it is now in Benin for sure. Some
great political disturbance is going to happen in the very near future! Leaders
of opinion and the catholic church are already ringing the alarm bell.
The country's main trade unions are now staging an all-out fight
against the government. They staged a strategy for 48-hour
renewable strikes to protest against the use of brutal force against a peaceful
protestation rally against Yayi Boni's bad governance which took place end of
December 2013. The first round occurred January 7-8, 2014. The second round January
15-16.
According to trade unions leaders's declarations, the 48-hour renewable strike
would eventually evolve into a permanent strike till something happen if the
government does not fire those responsible for the repression at the administration
level - which seems unlikely.
Therefore a sober observer of Benin's political and social scenery at the beginning
of this 2014-year can reasonably predict that something is going to happen in
the very near future, that would reshuffle the political cards in Benin. A coup?
Maybe. Or something else would happen before Yayi Boni's rule ends at the constitutional
term of April 5, 2016.
